Joint Pain |
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used successfully to joint pain long before the existence of Western medicine. Treatment is designed to meet the unique presentation of each patient. In all over the world this process is used to cure all types of joint pains. Joint pain is thought to be the result of blockage of the flow of Qi or soul, the life force energy. This blockage can be caused by the invasion of pathogenic temporal conditions including wind, cold, damp or damp-heat. The clinical manifestation of the resultant syndromes, that is whether the joint is cold or hot, swollen stiff, it will depend on the pathogenic influence. The treatment is designed to address the specific underlying Qi disturbance that occurs in each presentation.
Pros and cons of acupuncture
Acupuncture is unable to change the original structure of a degenerated joint. However the amount of pain occurring in an area may be exacerbated if blocked Qi exists there. Acupuncture improves the flow of energy through the affected area, along with the fluids that nourish the joint. This alone can result in significant relief. However, the benefits of the acupuncture treatment do not end there. Every acupuncture treatment that is done in accordance with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine must treat the whole person as well. The practitioner works to correct the underlying energy disharmonies and thus impact all the body's systems. The arthritic patient may get significant relief as a result of this process. Extensive research has shown that acupuncture treatment releases endorphins. Although their presence is temporary, this neurotransmitter helps to deal with chronic discomfort by improving the mood.
Acupuncture For Chronic Joint Pain Management
Acupuncture effectively treats chronic joint pain conditions including fibromyalgia, arthritis, tendonitis, and knee and hip osteoarthritis. Medication, physical therapy and various forms of exercise often utilized in allopathic care of chronic joint pain may not result in effective pain management. Many patients receiving acupuncture experience reduced pain and improved joint function in as few as 10 treatment sessions.
Acupuncture frequently reduces the chronic pain and joint stiffness associated with fibromyalgia, and also improves fatigue and anxiety symptoms. As a stand-alone therapy, acupuncture is effective in the symptomatic treatment of patients who are unable to tolerate medication side effects resulting from intake of analgesics, antidepressants and muscle relaxants. Arthritis patients receiving acupuncture often experience a significant reduction in the number of tender joints and a measurable decrease in pain, stiffness and swelling.
Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with disease modifying agents, may provide beneficial pain relief for those with otherwise intractable rheumatoid arthritis. When used as a primary treatment for tennis elbow and other forms of tendonitis, acupuncture reduces the pain and tenderness at or near a joint and the swelling around the joint area. Acupuncture induces muscle and tendon relaxation around the elbow joint and improves energy while enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities. Selected acupoints stimulate production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Moxibustion may be applied to warm the area and improve blood circulation.
Osteoarthritis conditions, when treated with acupuncture, often show significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life compared to those who receive routine allopathic care alone. Acupuncture is a valuable treatment option when combined within a multidisciplinary integrative approach to treat the disorder. Acupuncture therapy for osteoarthritis often results in reducing dependence on pharmacotherapy and improves functional ability. World Health Organization (WHO)
on Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine |
It is important to understand what is meant by the word 'health'. The World Health Organization define health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of health problems. In a publication "Acupuncture: The WHO View", the World Health Organization found that acupuncture was indicated in treating the following conditions:
|
Acute Tonsilitis
Bedwetting
Bladder Dysfunction
Bronchial Asthma
Bronchitis
Cataracts
Central Retinitis
Common Cold
Conjunctivitis
Constipation
Dental Pain

US National Institutes of Health |
The US National Institutes of Health issued a consensus statement on acupuncture in 1997, which states that "acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is practiced widely in the United States... and ... promising results have emerged showing the efficacy of acupuncture". The NIH further states that "there is sufficient evidence of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value." The NIH report mentions that the efficacy of acupuncture has been found in the following conditions:
|
Addictions
Asthma
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Dental Pain
Fibromyalgia
Headache
Low Back Pain

Menstrual Cramps
Nausea/Vomiting
Osteoarthritis
